It was born 10 billion years ago out of the merger of many smaller protogalaxies and then, around 8 billion years ago, it ran head-on into another galaxy to form a giant that became the M31 galaxy we see today. Using six filters means stars can be categorized by color (which in turn tells us much about their mass, age, temperature, and more), and a lot of the dynamics and evolution of Andromeda will be discernible. And here we are, decades later, looking at them effortlessly on our computers, thanks to a telescope bearing his name and the hard work of a lot of folks putting this image together
Observing M31, the Andromeda Galaxy
M 31 lies at a distance of 2.4 million light years, but on a clear night you can see it without any optical aid from a moderate observing site, as a small and fuzzy patch of light of the 4th magnitude. With Bresser 7x50 binoculars from my own backyard (450 feet altitude) From my own backyard I regularly observed M 31 with 7x50 Bresser binoculars (field of view 6.1 degrees)
For example, billions of small reflective bits of metal could be placed in an orbit between earth and sun, possibly at the L1 Lagrangian point (so they would stay in the same relative place from earth as we go around the sun). New data collected by the Hubble Space Telescope proves, NASA says, that in 4 billion years the Milky Way and Andromeda will collide or pass each other by so closely that the gravitational force each exerts on the other will cause them to slow down to the point of merging
