Northern Lights: Light at the end of the tundra - Telegraph
It is a brief encounter none of us will forget, sparking feelings of humility and euphoria that can only lead to one thing: a manic downing of celebratory vodkas in the Icebar. That is why some Arctic hotels have rooms with specially fitted skylights above the bed (for what is inevitably known as auroral sex) and every guide has a tale about a close encounter between a snowmobile and an enthusiastic honeymoon couple cavorting in the snow
A Winter Camping Trip in the Northern Forest.
If the temperature is above -10oC (-14oF), it becomes difficult to create a solid platform of snow on which to pitch a tent, and quinzees will not freeze well.Open WaterIn some ways the stuff of nightmares, open water is an area on a body of water that has not frozen over and is, as the description aptly puts it, open. This was followed by a clear sky that evening with an allied drop in temperature to between-10oC (-14oF) and -20oC (-4oF).Rapidly changing temperatures in the boreal forest can cause the winter camper more difficulty than constant cold

What does it mean for an atom to be excited? Atoms consist of a central nucleus and a surrounding cloud of electrons encircling the nucleus in an orbit. And even though we know the scientific reason for the aurora, the dazzling natural light show can still fire our imaginations to visualize fire bridges, gods or dancing ghosts
Our governor here in Florida refused Federal funds for a rail line, which I think is idiotic as it creates jobs and adds an alternative to car traffic within the state. I think people basically like each other and the money saved from arms and ammo could pay all costs of bridges, connection roadways, infrastructure, (all), without a hiccup
Though they can occur anywhere, auroras can be seen most often near the North and South Poles. When an aurora occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, we call it aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights. Each night, the AuroraMAX webcam broadcasts live video from Yellowknife, Canada, allowing viewers all over the world to experience the beauty of the Aurora Borealis

These experiments have shown that if oxygen can reach these high altitudes, there are plenty of ways for it to gain even more energy and escape near-Earth space entirely

Hopefully, I will get the chance to travel to Australia and when I do, I'll come back to this hub of yours to see when is the best time to go there and see the Southern Lights. Dog Sled Tours Dog sledding is an incredible experience and even if you don't go the whole hog of having a full 5 day dog sled tour it's definitely something to do on your northern lights holiday
Auroral photography: A guide to capturing the Northern Lights: Digital Photography Review
All else being equal, your exposure will be inversely proportional to the square of your aperture, meaning that a lens at f 2.8 will need four times as long to capture an image as at f 1.4. what I do is get those toe warmers from the store the ones that have the sticky backing and attach them to the outside of the camera housing where the battery is located! I have never had a problem since doing this many many Alaskans who shoot photography use this same trick.Hope this helps0 upvotesBy Bronze Age Man (Oct 14, 2011)Well written article, very informative

How to photograph the northern lights with a digital camera.
I will follow your suggestions to the word and look forward to some decent photos from the depths of Northern Scotland Given the equipment that I have if you have any other suggestions I would love to know what they might be but I respect that you are a busy person and cannot reply to many e-mails. Aurora captured on a camera rarely looks like the eye saw it anyway, since you are dealing with a timed exposure, and a digital sensor that is able to capture colors that it is hard to see with the human eye

Aurora Photos: The Best Pictures Of The Northern And Southern Lights
A great number of these collisions create the light that's visible to the naked eye.The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, is seen in the northern hemisphere, whereas the aurora australias, or southern lights, is visible in the southern latitudes. NASA says that more geomagnetic storms occur in the fall and spring, and this is a great time for viewing the aurora borealis or australis (if you're lucky enough to be in an area where it's visible!) According to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, an aurora is caused by the collision of electrons from space with atoms and molecules of gases (like oxygen and nitrogen) from the Earth's atmosphere
How to Photograph the Northern Lights eBook
I was able to get set up and start shooting in a short amount of time because I had my camera set to your suggested settings (good starting point) before I got out of the car. Every camera shop, photography school and or clubs and anybody interested in photography should have a copy of this book, even if they are not in a position to photograph the auroras, just to have the knowledge on every level concerning the auroras and cold weather, I think would be very much appreciated
