So in the end, I have ended up actually selling both my Apple TV 3 and WD TV Live and I now in the process of setting up an old laptop with Linux (Ubuntu or Mint) and puting XBMC on it. If I go back to the wireless connection, I can do what I want, but it transfers files at about 1 Mb per second, and stops after about 100 MBs have been transferred, and you have to start the transfer all over again from the beginning, so there's no way I'm going to transfer 60 GBs. It's showing up as a streaming device, and I can stream from the WD to the computer, but can't map the WD so that I can transfer files back and forth, which is what I need to do

I plugged it into the router with a network cable and then DHCP assigned the IP and found a firmware upgrade for it so I installed it hoping it would fix the WiFi issue
