I only get beeping (not a single beep though) if i hold the 6 and 4 down for to long, it seems to be a mac version of the default windows beeping when you accidentally depress a key for to long whilst a machine boots, or have a boot problem (I guess windows nicked the idea off of the macs)

How to tell if your Mac is 64 bit

Reply Randall Smock says: April 6, 2010 at 4:23 pm But to go a littler further with this; even though your Mac might have a CPU that is capable, it might not be able to natively boot 64 bit. If your machine is *capable* of booting 64 bit but does not by default and you want to, you can hold down the 6 and 4 keys on a cold start up to see if that does the trick, conversely you can hold down the 3 and 2 keys to boot 32 bit mode for the above mentioned driver issues

Road to Mac OS X Snow Leopard: 64-bit to the Kernel

More accurately, whether running on 32 and 64-bit CPUs, Mac OS X loads the same kernel image and run it as a 32-bit process, although when run on 64-bit hardware, the 32-bit kernel switches into "long mode compatibility mode." Apple's current implementation allows the existing 32-bit kernel to run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications at once, as well as being able to handle 64-bit virtual memory allocations, giving 64-bit applications and background tasks the capacity to allocate memory spaces larger than 4GB when working with large data sets. Instead, it means that the early developer build of Snow Leopard does not yet supply 64-bit kernel extensions for some of the critical components of the MacBook and other consumer machines

Applications run just fine in 64-bit mode on top of the 32-bit kernel, and even in earlier versions of Mac OS X it's been possible to install and take advantage of much more than 4GB of RAM. You should note that there is no distinction between the 32bit and 64bit versions of OSX, the difference is in the EFI which is essentially the firmware controlling the interface between your OS and your hardware

This is why most people focus on the address space for a specific program rather than whether the hardware is "64-bit" or how much of it is "64-bit" It really doesn't matter until you get to a more specific question.
