Here is a place on the comparison table where VMware Fusion differentiates itself from Parallels Desktop; the latter currently only supports 32-bit OSes. To little surprise it's the 2008 flavors of Macs for professionals: the Mac Pro (Early 2008) workstation, the 17-inch MacBook Pro (Early 2008) and both Early and Late 2008 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks

So I downloaded the boot64.efi file and placed it on the desktop, and then followed the instructions down to the following line: sudo chown root:wheel boot64.efi Then I unlocked the boot.efi file and replaced it with the boot64.efi (Of course, my system will now always boot in 64.bit kernel mode, but I would like to see if I can upgrade my RAM to 8 GB and have read the chances are better in this mode). Apparently every thing is working, wireless, core temperature below 60 degrees, will run more test and overload the systems to verify the behavior, I will also tweak my system with secrets, so it has to be a super fast twaked computer

Others have mentioned some of the advantages in terms of the processing efficiencies that can be gained but an area that people continually miss is the significant advantage of double precision floating point (fp) on native 64-bit architectures. It's more interactiveI'm just wondering what will happen when networks are made up of stand alone devices powerful enough to connect directly without the use of any intermediary devices or technologies

Road to Mac OS X Snow Leopard: 64-bit to the Kernel

More accurately, whether running on 32 and 64-bit CPUs, Mac OS X loads the same kernel image and run it as a 32-bit process, although when run on 64-bit hardware, the 32-bit kernel switches into "long mode compatibility mode." Apple's current implementation allows the existing 32-bit kernel to run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications at once, as well as being able to handle 64-bit virtual memory allocations, giving 64-bit applications and background tasks the capacity to allocate memory spaces larger than 4GB when working with large data sets. Instead, it means that the early developer build of Snow Leopard does not yet supply 64-bit kernel extensions for some of the critical components of the MacBook and other consumer machines

Vista will install with no hitch at all, its when vista starts you will find there are a few drivers not working, such as the airport card, and network card. Open the device manager and right click on the hardware not working (has a little question mark over it) and select reinstall driver and find your way to your copy of drivers from your OSX disk

What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit?

  http://pc.net/helpcenter/answers/difference_between_32-bit_and_64-bit
Since most computers released over the past two decades were built on a 32-bit architecture, most operating systems were designed to run on a 32-bit processor. Therefore, popular operating systems, such as Windows and Mac OS X began shipping in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, which allowed them to run on either 32 or 64-bit hardware

On the other hand, in 64-bit mode processor has more registers, so it doesn't need to access memory that often, also, some calculations (64-bit numbers etc.) are more efficient. Even though the cost of RAM hardware is relatively low this feature still offers advantages for netbooks and other lower-powered laptops, virtualization and in the case of embedded devices, especially those that use flash memories that have a limited lifespan, dependent on write-use and thus wear out quickly when used as a swap device

Have I been reading correctly and this will in fact work, or will I need to upgrade my OS or download drivers once installed? I'm pretty much considering doing a fresh install of XP as I'm coming from an AMD Ahtlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz, 1.5GB RAM. In order to take advantage of the processor's 64-bit capabilities you will need to purchase windows XP or windows vista 64-bit edition and you will also need to install the 64-bit drivers for all your hardware

In 32-bit mode, an application can only address up to 4GB of memory, while the 64-bit mode allows for memory addressing of up to a theoretical 16EB (each exabyte is 1 billion gigabytes)

While many users may find that a 32-bit processor provides them with enough performance and memory access, applications that tend to use large amounts of memory may show vast improvements with the upgraded processor. Image and video editing software, 3D rendering utilities, and video games will make better use of a 64-bit architecture and operating system, especially if the machine has 8 or even 16 GB of RAM that can be divided among the applications that need it

How to tell if your Mac is 64 bit

Reply Randall Smock says: April 6, 2010 at 4:23 pm But to go a littler further with this; even though your Mac might have a CPU that is capable, it might not be able to natively boot 64 bit. If your machine is *capable* of booting 64 bit but does not by default and you want to, you can hold down the 6 and 4 keys on a cold start up to see if that does the trick, conversely you can hold down the 3 and 2 keys to boot 32 bit mode for the above mentioned driver issues

The benefits of using a 64-bit operating system are most apparent when you have a large amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer, typically 4 GB of RAM or more. How do I tell if my computer can run a 64-bit version of Windows? To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor

Applications run just fine in 64-bit mode on top of the 32-bit kernel, and even in earlier versions of Mac OS X it's been possible to install and take advantage of much more than 4GB of RAM. You should note that there is no distinction between the 32bit and 64bit versions of OSX, the difference is in the EFI which is essentially the firmware controlling the interface between your OS and your hardware

This is why most people focus on the address space for a specific program rather than whether the hardware is "64-bit" or how much of it is "64-bit" It really doesn't matter until you get to a more specific question. I have a version of VMWare that will only run in 32-bit, and since upgrading to Lion, it boots into 64-bit, so I need to reboot and hold the 3+2 keys down upon booting up to make it run in 32-bit mode
