I've concluded that it must be a hardware issue although there is no visible, external damage because I have since restored the phone to 5.1.1 through iTunes. Anything you can make of this? I mean it seems like a good sign to me because one thing I forgot to mention originally was that the percentage readings would go up and down a few percentage points occasionally
